Balancing work and homeschool

Several have asked me can you work and still homeschool? My answer is certainly as long as you find that balance and don’t try to do it all alone.

Support from your family is a must. After all work, family and homeschooling are all full time positions. Next is finding that balance that is important to get through the day. In order to find that balance we must schedule our days to get everything done. Scheduling can only be done after you know what kind of work you will be doing and curriculum you are planning to use. Then you can figure out the tools needed to accomplish the goals in each endeavor.

Curriculum choices abound. When choosing a curriculum we need to:

Evaluate the other activities in the day

How much time do we have to actually teach each child one on one? How much time do we need to spend on work projects each day and what about sleep? Do we need assistance of a video where a teacher might be able to present the academic materials in some subjects for us to assist us some? Remember we need down time for ourselves and time to love on our children too.

Evaluate the quality of the curriculum

Is it well put together and professional? Is it up to date with the current era and proven by other’s success?

Evaluate the publisher’s educational philosophy

Does it have the philosophy to stick with through your homeschool journey? Is it a sound curriculum that has proof of the success? Does it have a biblical worldview? Is it going to build up the children’s character through each and every subject?

Evaluate the tools provided within the curriculum

Are there Lesson Plans for each subject and laid out so you can easily follow them as you present the lesson? Is there a Distance Learning option in case your need to have some help with particular subjects or maybe you will need all the lessons presented for you depending on the type of work you plan to do in addition to homeschooling?

What did we use through our journey to accomplish our goals? BJU Press Homeschool.

We are so thankful for a curriculum that has it all! We homeschooled for 20 years with BJU Press and I worked from home 13 of those years. It can be done and still achieve success.

For more information and special discounts on the curriculum I have used over the years, contact one of my Daughters. We would love to share more about my journey with you.
